Underfloor heating a winner for businessesMore business properties are being built with underfloor heating than ever before and not just for commercial reasonsMore business properties are being built with or installing underfloor heating systems than ever before and not just for commercial reasons. Over the last decade, underfloor heating companies have reported an average increase in commercial property orders of 25 per cent each year. And when the difference to a company’s balance sheet is worked out, it isn’t hard to see why. But there are other benefits to installing an underfloor system. Increased efficiencies of underfloor heatingTypically, underfloor heating systems will reduce heating costs by 15 to 20 per cent in domestic homes. But bigger buildings benefit even more from the cost reductions brought about by underfloor heating, and it has been estimated that commercial properties can cut their heating costs by 40 to 45 per cent. Larger spaces need more radiators on more walls to enable the hot air they pump out to circulate fully around the room. Because hot air moves rapidly upwards, this creates a huge amount of wasted heat, with most of it circulating around the ceiling area while staff sit shivering below. By turning the floor into one large radiator, companies can ensure the heat is distributed evenly around the premises. And because the heat starts from below the floor, none is wasted as it passes up through the building. Other benefits of underfloor heatingAs well as being far more efficient and cost-effective, underfloor heating has the knock-on benefits of increasing staff comfort and well-being and reducing illnesses caused by under-heated offices which could go on to save British businesses the equivalent of millions of pounds each year in lost workhours due to sickness. Additional benefits are won by the removal of radiators from the walls. More space is freed up, either for desk space or storage or filing solutions. And the increased efficiencies the underfloor heating system brings translate into lower carbon emissions, reducing a business’s carbon footprint. Underfloor heating becomes underfloor coolingFurthermore, in summer, water-based underfloor heating systems can have cold water pumped through them to become cooling systems. The heating argument now works in reverse: keeping the floor cool is a far more effective and far less expensive way of cooling a building than using an air conditioning system. It also maintains a higher level of air quality, which is particularly important for desk-based occupations. Air conditioning systems combined with excessive monitor use can irritate users eyes, leading to long-term damage something avoided with underfloor heating (or, in this case, cooling) systems.
