Underfloor Heating and Student Life

Underfloor heating is perhaps the last thing you'd expect in student digs.

A feature in the Independent newspaper has raised questions over the future of dark, dank and grim student digs. Whereas before student digs were expected to be as poor as the students who lived in them, today the flats and studios on offer feature more aspirational touches, including underfloor heating. The days of below standard accommodation could be coming to an end as landlords and universities improve standards and lift expectations.

Salubrious Underfloor Heating 

Forget dank bedrooms, gruesome kitchens and damp wallpaper – underfloor heating and trendy, functional interior design is becoming more of a feature, especially in cities like London where a significant proportion of applicants are mature and expect more than decent accommodation. As well as designer touches like underfloor heating, many renters expect 20MB broadband and flat-screen TVs as essential features in their temporary homes. Even small studios and flats can be transformed into an oasis of luxury with a little investment and high quality finishings, like underfloor heating. 

The Studious (and Luxurious?) Life 

Some educational establishments are pouring money into their accommodation services in order to attract more discerning overseas students who may expect more in terms of quality – especially considering the higher fees they have to pay. One halls of residence in London hired a dedicated designer to include modern essentials and functional living to offer a sophisticated but affordable lifestyle. Clean, new and bright are buzz words when it comes to flats and self contained studios. In Bethnal Green for example, 203 studio flats for students come complete with underfloor heating and dishwashers, as well as top floor common rooms, study areas, roof areas and landscaped courtyards. Renting in bespoke designer studios is usually more expensive than a one-off room in a house share, but graduates have said the new flats complete with underfloor heating would actually work out cheaper because the electricity and gas bills are so high in old houses. 

Studying in the Sauna 

As well as flat screens, broadband and underfloor heating, many flats come complete with a TV licence, Sky Sports, Freeview and even utility bills all inclusive in the rent. Property management companies who rent student flats and studios say that students are demanding more lifestyle and leisure features. More spaces feature leather furniture, LCD TVs, double beds, and some accommodation blocks go one further than underfloor heating, offering pool, sauna and hot tubs too.
