An underfloor heating project in a Scottish community hall helped win a prestigious building award for a team of builders 

An underfloor heating project at a Scottish community hall helped win a prestigious building award for an Aberdeenshire builder – and has helped provide a major focal point for the village of Strathdon. 

The builder was named best commercial builder in Britain at the Master Builder of the Year Awards because of his restoration work at Lonach Hall in Strathdon, near the Cairngorm Mountains in northern Scotland. And a meticulous underfloor heating job played a big role in winning the award. 

Restoration project with underfloor heating

According to the BBC, “When Lonach Hall became semi-derelict, the community produced a business plan for a £250,000 restoration project. They said their community of Strathdon would not be the same without the hall, which had served as a focal point for village and business life.” 

Aberdeenshire builder Michael Forbes impressed the Lonach Hall Community Association when the restoration work was put out to tender. A large part of his job involved the underfloor heating. 

Underfloor heating: painstaking work

He said, “We lifted the floor, putting in ducting for underfloor heating, then numbered all the boards and painstakingly put them back exactly how we'd found them." 

Industry website Buildingtalk.com noted that, “the hall now has full insulation, state-of-the-art underfloor heating and a sprung dance floor.” 

The community association praised the underfloor heating system and the rest of the work, saying, "The approach taken by Mike and his team was very professional and every care was taken to minimise impact on the historic building, while ensuring its sustainability for future generations."

At the same awards ceremony, a York builder won the best medium renovation award for building an extension to another historic hall – another job that demanded highly energy-efficient technology, including structural insulated panels, a ventilation heat-exchange system and underfloor heating with room-by-room controls.
