From the country house to the dog house, it seems that you’re no-one these days until you’ve got underfloor heating. And from the A-list to the Z-list, celebrities are splashing out by installing underfloor heating in far from obvious places. 

Far from being a luxury, underfloor heating is becoming seen as de rigeur; certainly in the places you might find the celebs. The Kempinski Hotel Corvinus in Budapest would be unlikely to get Madonna as a guest were it not for its underfloor heating; ditto Joan Collins, Reese Witherspoon and Nigel Havers at the MacDonald Spa Hotel in Bath.

Underfloor heating is already a feature of many celebrity homes, naturally: Kylie Mingogue celebrated her recent return to full health by splashing out on a refurbishment of her £3 million Chelsea flat that included a £5,000 underfloor heating system. 

Even pets are getting in on the act. The celebrity “pet set” is headed by Sharon Osbourne who is among many who insist on underfloor heating for their dogs. Trinny Woodall lent her celebrity status to a re-homing centre for stray dogs in Harefield London in 2006. She agreed to open the Dogs Trust West London centre, which contains 75 glass-fronted kennels, all with underfloor heating, set in 6.5 hectares (16 acres) of farmland – the ultimate in canine rehab.

But never mind dogs. Back in his Leeds United days, Tottenham and England goalkeeper Paul Robinson took no chances with his car not starting when he had his own house built near York, having underfloor heating installed in his garage to stop the engine getting too cold. 

And why stop at home? In Vail, Colorado, an entire ski resort employs underfloor heating under its pavements so that Britney Spears and Cameron Diaz don’t encounter any snow until they hit the ski-lifts.

The reasons for underfloor heating’s popularity with the stars are simple: underfloor heating is synonymous with luxury and, perhaps equally importantly for modern celebrities, is seen as a “green” alternative to traditional heating systems.
