Once you’ve chosen your underfloor heating system, you just need to choose the floor covering to go over it – and you can have just about anything.

Ultimately, the choice will depend on your budget, the room you are installing the underfloor heating in, and your personal preferences – but here’s a look at some of the most popular choices to help you decide.

Underfloor heating and tiles

Stone, slate, ceramic & porcelain tiles make ideal floor coverings for underfloor heating. They transmit heat evenly and are unaffected by changes in temperature or humidity. They are also excellent at storing the heat and emitting it back out slowly – making them perfect receptors for off-peak energy.

They are also waterproof and easy to clean, making them ideal for kitchens and bathrooms. The problem with tiles is that not everyone likes the look of them in their living room – they’re not the cosiest floor coverings in the world.

Carpet and underfloor heating

Carpet is a comfortable and attractive floor covering, and although it has lost ground in recent years it remains a popular choice.

However, remember that carpet is an insulator. If you are laying carpet over underfloor heating then make sure that the carpet and underlay are not more than 22mm in thickness and do not have a combined tog rating of more than 1.5. To exceed either would reduce your underfloor heating’s effectiveness.

Underfloor heating and laminates

Improvements in technology have made laminate flooring and similar floor coverings far more popular in recent years.

Many laminates are designed with underfloor heating in mind. When choosing any laminate flooring for underfloor heating, though, it is essential to use the proper underlay – to stop the laminate from warping – and choose one that isn’t held together by glue, as the heat could melt it.

Otherwise, laminate’s flexibility, durability and wood-look make it an ideal substitute for hard-wood floors, which are dealt with in more detail elsewhere on this website.

Ultimately, the choice is one only you can make – but consulting a professional in underfloor heating will always help.

The people at Robbens really know what they are talking about. Our house had a Robbens underfloor heating system and we needed to update the controls. The technical desk helped us find out what was needed, and we got everything from their online store....

We used a Robbens ready made underfloor heating kit in our new extention. The builders followed the instructions and installed it with no problems. We love the way we can control it independently of the rest of the house. Recommended....

My clients love the way underfloor heating allows complete design freedom with no radiators in the way of the furniture. Robbens have worked with us on many projects, and will even come and meet the clients before the build even starts. Great service....
