VERSATILITY OF ROBBENS SYSTEM BRINGS UNDERFLOOR HEATING
COMFORT TO SUSSEX FAMILY'S “LIVING ROOM” EXTENSION

Robbens' ability to work with all kinds of floor constructions can reap dividends in bringing the advantages of top quality "designed" underfloor heating to the even smaller project.

All the benefits of Robbens' versatile technology are featured in the recent extension to the Townsend family home at Hurstpierpoint near Brighton.

Alan Townsend and his wife Lynda certainly needed more space for their fast growing family - two boys and two girls aged between nine and two. Reluctant to leave their home in the quiet Sussex village - which is also ideally located for Alan's work as a director of a seafood importing company - they opted to "add on".

Plans took a major step forward when they discovered that Jock Heller, a local friend for some time, was also the man who had built their house 25 years earlier!

Jock agreed to act as project manager for the new scheme and work was soon under way.

Impressed

The decision to incorporate Robbens underfloor heating was made at an early stage.

"We'd been impressed by the obvious advantages of underfloor heating in regard to safety and space saving," says Alan Townsend " and Robbens were recommended as the system of choice."

The extension comprises a major enlargement of the kitchen, which has been completely refitted, with adjoining study and utility room.

A suspended floor system was used for the main kitchen area. During installation the spaces between the joists were first filled with insulation material to prevent downward heat transfer (see www.underfloorheating.co.uk) . The loops of Robbens multi-layer aluminium and p-EX pipework could then be clipped in position below special aluminium conducting sheets with the loop ends connected to a manifold on the primary heating circuit, supplied by a new gas-fired boiler.

When the system is in operation the aluminium sheets ensure that the heat is conducted right across the entire floor surface, providing mainly radiant energy into the room, rapidly bringing it up to the desired temperature.

Solid floors

The new study and utility room feature solid floors. Loops of Robbens multi-layer pipework were fixed in position above a layer of insulation.

After pressure testing, a normal sand and cement screed was laid to integrate the heating system into the floor structure and provide a smooth, even surface for the oak-veneered, engineering grade plywood, which is the final floor finish.

The ends results have been spectacular. After just one heating season with the new system, Alan Townsend wishes he could convert the whole house to Robbens underfloor heating!
