About the System

Is the System on all the time?

To function properly, the underfloor heating system must be able to fire the boiler at any time within the daily 24 hour period, but it will only do this if a room requires heat. The system works on set-back temperatures (usually night time) 2 or 3 ° C lower than the required day time temperature.

Doesn't it take a long time for the heat to come through the floor?

As the System runs on minimum room temperatures, see set-back above, the rooms do not get so cold that it takes ages to warm up to the level where full comfort is again experienced.

What happens if a pipe leaks?

The pipe loops in the floor are generally continuous, and the loops must be pressure tested before any floors are laid. If a pipe is damaged during or after installation, we can supply a fitting to make a safe and totally reliable repair to the loop.

What type of pipe do you use? What is the Guarentee?

We supply a multi layer Cross linked polyethylene pipe (PE-X) with aluminium vapour barrier pipe, made by Frankische GmbH and meeting a wide range of European standards. It has a 10 year consequential damage warranty.

How big is the manifold?

The manifold and System Controller can usually be fitted under the stairs or at the back of a cupboard. Actual size depends on the job. Please ask us for dimensions once your project is designed.

Will it be the sole source of heat?

Normally, yes. In a new build situation we would expect to be able to meet the full heat load of the building. We will tell you if any extra heating is going to be required.

Why can't a particular room be heated?

If we can only achieve low temperatures it is usually due to high heat loss combined with small floor area. Contact us with the specific details.

How do I operate the system?

You will have a room thermostat in each room, to set as you desire. In one room per floor, you will need a second room thermostat on which will control the night set-back temperatures. The times of day/night operation are set on a timer, usually situated out of sight, with the manifold.

Does it affect health?

The European design code sets limits on floor surface temperatures, such that people should not experience discomfort through their feet. A warm floor, with low humidity at the floor margin, reduces the numbers of house dust mites – better for allergy sufferers.
